How about a dierama? It's unusual but fairly easy to grow. See blodyn's recent photos for one in flower

Has she got many shrubs?
23 Jun, 2009
you just made a valid point, just remember her neighbour removed a wall and its a new border for her now and i think she said she wanted shrubs in this border, but no i dont think she has many,i keep trying to get her to let me take pics but she wont yet

I asked because often older people don't have shrubs, they tend to stick to roses and flowers. How about a Pieris Forest Flame - evergreen, slow growing, new red leaves, nice flowers in Spring, looks good all year. Or a Spiraea japonica Goldflame, beautiful coloured leaves and pink flat heads of flowers.

i do like the pieris forest flame and the spirea, think i might go for all 3,the 2 you suggested there and the dierama

Lucky auntie!

Lucky auntie - how about one of the purple leaved heucheras for contrast with the variegated leaves of the pieris and the yellow spiraea ones. Just a thought....

hmmm, ill have to have a look at the prices first, i might actually have spirea of some sort,if its the one you suggested i might give her that one before it gets to established to move easily

How about a Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium). Jacob's Ladder leads to heaven if I remember Sunday school correctly. They are very pretty plants and like the shade.

I'm so sorry to hear about your brother and send you my thoughts and a big hug. xxx
Just a thought - Pieris need an acid soil - does she have that?
24 Jun, 2009
If she lives in London, Pieris will be fine Spritz - they thrive here without any extra acidification necessary.

she doesnt live in london but she does have ericaceous compost as she grows azaleas and rhododendrons, thanks for all the ideas and best wishes, very kind of you all

How about a nice fuchsia? If her bleeding heart is in the ground, she'll have a gap by mid July where it was, cos they die back by then. If she plants a fuchsia next to it, that'll take over when the bleeding heart's finished. I suggest Madame Cornelissen (flowers deep pink outside with white inside). Should be cut down to the base every year end March/April.
