Ornamental tree care for root shoots

Allegheny/PA, United States

I have an ornamental flowering tree, I believe it is a redbud; medium sized tree gets dark purple/green leaves with pink flowers late March/April. It gets alot of root shoots each year. How do I remedy this?

Ornamental flowering trees are usually grafted onto the stalk or small trunk of another type of small tree and it is that main stalk that is suckering. I simply remove those suckers at their base and the tree is not harmed. Sometimes there are small branches or leaves on the stalk itself which I just trim off too. I am not aware of any way to stop this. Hope this helps. LP
