Can a passion flower be grown in a pot?

I have just bought a passion flower, (the regular white one with the blue centre) but the perfect place in my garden which would provide plenty of afternoon sun, and lots of support for it to climb, unfortunately has no soil for it and would require it to go in a pot. I don't want to kill the plant and dont know whether to plant it in this position or not. Please can someone advise. Thank you :)

Needs a pot 12-18 inches wide by 12-16 inches deep, according to my Contained Garden book.
