gooseberries or should say no gooseberries!

Northumberland, United Kingdom Gb

Hi all, must apologise for not being on for ages but haven't forgotton you! I have 7 gooseberry bushes of which 2 are very old and produce abundant goosegogs every year without fail. The other 5 are younger but still a good few years old and they too have always given us fantastic crops ...huge and yummy. This year, though, the latter 5 have produced all of about 10 berries ie 2 per bush (slight exaggeration but certainly not enough to make a single tumbler of gooseberry fool) The funny thing is that these 5 are in a fruit cage so it is not bird or squirrel attack whereas the other 2 are out in the open garden. All the bushes look really green and healthy...any help as to the cause of this dirth of goosegogs?

It could be the lack of potash. Next Feb/March apply 2 to 3 ounces to a square yard around the growing area, it is too late for this year.
