Put it where is gets sun most of the day if it is a bin with a lid. If no lid then shade - to help keep moisture levels.

Scroll to the letter C at the bottom of the page ... click on Compost and you'll find lots of information and ideas ... I have a black 'Dalek' type composter which is in shade most of the day ... put the right 'ingredients' in and it should compost well regardless of the sun. ... Good luck with yours.

Site it in a sheltered spot in full sun if you can as it needs help to heat up and dont let the contents dry out ut not too wet either. Do you have the bottom to it as it has drainage holes?
Put as much variety in as you can but not woody shrubs or rose stems etc, also you can add veg/friuit waste from your kitchen as long as it is not cooked. Dont be tempted to put weeds with seeds on in it as they may not get hot enough to kill them. I tend to chop up what I put in so it breaks down quicker. I do add grass cuttings but make sure they are well mixed with other things.
Turn it over from time to time and if you feel inclined you can use a compost accelerator to speed up the process. covering it with a piece of carpet over winter helps keep it warm.
You will learn to love this process once you have used the contents - which I estimate it will take about 18months.
Compost is made by heat and leaf mould is made by cold so you could do that at the same time nearby if you have a lot of leaves?
One other thing when taking the lid off be sure to anchor the bin as you do or it will all lift up and once past a 1/4 full very difficult to get it back in place.

I ordered a copy of 'Compost' by Claire Foster ISBN1-84403-405-4 from Waterstones. (£7.99)
She gives far more detail about everything going on in a compost bin, according to temperatures , which is very interesting. A good investment.
I lift the lid on my bins, and say " Hiya everybody !" to all the creepy crawlies that have found their way in there.
Its like having your own zoo. Ha ha.
