United Kingdom Gb

Hi I have a Witch Hazel and the leaves are turning brown at the edges. Am I over doing the4 watering or is this something else. IIt also has a lot of ants in the pot. How do I get it back to good health. Thanks

The simple answer is to plant it if you can. They like a cool root run in organically rich, free drained soil. I don't like things in pots unless they are going to be happy there and your plant certainly doesn't sound it.

Watering is always a problem for many people with plants in pots. They either give too much so the roots are constantly wet, too little or water infrequently assuming that the shower of rain half an hour ago will suffice.

In the ground, water is always moving gradually through the soil by osmosis making it a much more equitable environment for the roots. A shower of rain a mile away will still top up the water table over the whole area.

I have had a similar experience. I have 2 which I grew from seed (Corylus), one totally crisped up and the other is green and bushy.

Both in same size pots and same soil, get watered at the same time etc.. Strange.. It's still alive though.

Hi all, thank you for your replies. I will certainly consider your advice about planting it out Fractal. Will have to free up some space first. Thank you again. Trish
