I deadhead mine to prolong the flowering period. But I leave the stems over winter to give them some frost protection and once I can see plenty of new shoots in April/May the old stems can be removed, if you have very few new shoots cut the old stem higher leaving 3-4 leaves on each. This is when I would feed and mulch too.
