i think the only way so you can still eat them is organic ways and pulling them off and stomping them. also maybe next year as it starts to come out of dormancy put like a fruit net over it like farmers use to keep the bugs off it. ive never even seen a gooseberry but have heard alot of people asking about cats on them.

i had a similar problem this year with my first peach tree the ates decided to start eating them..will be getting netting next season

As Dragonsfire say, had picking is the only way. You can get sprays but you actually have to aim in dirrectly onto the caterpillars so you may as well pick them off and dispose of rather than turning each leaf over to spray them and they will still continue eating plant as they dont die instantly! Sprays may also not be suitable for edible crops thou.

You do need to be very vigilant and spray (if you want to) with Provado Ultimate bug Killer as soon as you see the first damaged leaf or if possible even before!.
Then there is another thing you can do to help. If your plant does get damaged then feed it with something high in nitrogen (read the packet) to promote new leaf growth to replace the eaten leaves.
The wild gooseberries in our hedge get eaten like this every year, but the fruit is still edible to those who can eat gooseberries.
