Pruning Roses

Is there anything special I should know about pruning a rose bush? I've heard there are some specific techniques.

I don't know if this helps, but there's a lot of nonsense talked about rose pruning - I always do it the recommended way (back to an outward facing bud at the right time of year, deadhead by taking 10 inches of stem to an outward facing bud until July, when you reduce the amount of stem you take to about six inches) but in experiments at Wisley, they cut some down with a hedge trimmer and they grew just as well as the carefully pruned group the following year. If you really want good guidance, get yourself a copy of D.G. Hessayon's The Rose Expert - everything you ever wanted to know about roses, including how and when to prune, for a tenner.

Found this info for you
Know when to prune. Prune your rosebushes once they are dormant or after the last frost of spring. Older roses should be pruned after they have bloomed.
Step
2Clear the area of anything that may house bugs and sickness, such as grass and foliage.
Step
3Remove any dead wood or branches in the middle of the plants.
Step
4Keep healthy canes. Unhealthy, aged, slim or broken canes or those with deep grooves should be pruned. Green healthy canes or those growing in the bud should not be touched. If an entire cane must go make the cut close to the bud union.
Step
5Use pruning shears to make clean and smooth cuts at a 45-degree angle one-quarter inch above a leaf bud that points towards the outside of the plant. Continue pruning until the inner portion of the cane is white.
Step
6Remove any suckers. Pull them off the plant beneath the graft to prevent their return.
Step
7Finish it off. Coat all cuts with a sealing compound to ensure your rosebush stays healthy.
somebody else Im sure will be able to give you advice but hope this helps anyway
