How to stop tree stumps growig offshoots

Having had two trees cut down last year I now have a problem with the stumps growing side shoots .Any suggestions to stop this would be welcome..............

When they cut the tree they should have criss crossed on the top of the stump - what you can do is pour stump killer down into that and it will actually kill/rot the stump which would in turn kill the side shoots. You can get the stump killer in the garden centre.
