how to care for containerised heucharas during the winter

Answers

they pretty much look after themselves. if a prolonged dry spell they will need watering.
the only thing i do is regularly give the plant a gentle tug. if it pulls out check carefully for vine weevil grubs even deep into tthe woody part of the roots. the bits can be replanted if they are badly nibbled. otherwise they are usually ok.

Just to add tha t frost can damage the roots by going through the side of the pots, if prolonged could kill the plant, insulate ans a sheltered ite would help.
I lost two lovely ones last winter to the dreaded weevils.

I have 2 in urns the others are in the ground, I also give them a good mulch in the autumn and again early spring to help protect them, take care not to cover the crown though. The spring mulch also allows the roots to grow side ways into the mulch if they have heaved.

They lift out of the ground in frost Poppy its what they known to do sometimes, but if they are well mulched the roots grow in to it and they survive, it happened to one of mine this year.
