Is this going to be a tree?

It is a birch tree and has been growing for rather more than just this year

Thanks Moon grower. I have found a pic of Mrs. Popple last year with no sign of 'the tree' next to her. I'll put it on my garden photographs.

That is really odd... it would normally take several years for a birch to get to that size. Is someone playing a game with you?

yes, as mg says, looks like a birch... I'd wait till winter and move it somewhere itll have more room to grow. Worth keeping, Id say :-)

There will have been a single stem last year probably that you won't have noticed. The new leader and all the side branches will have developed this year.

Agree with Fractal - it's obviously been there for more than year and has only now got going and noticeable.
