I have an Elaeagnus pungens shrub which is rampant. How and when do I prune it?

This shrub can be used for hedging, which means it should be fine if you cut it now, but the usual time to prune these, if necessary, is after they've flowered, which is usually June/July. Prune some back now, and give it a good hard prune next year.
