Hi, my aquilegia are being totally decimated by small green caterpillars - theyve stripped the same plant twice now. Whats the best natural way to deal with this?

ok thanks - any idea what kind they are? theyre about 15mm long and green - it may be worth sacrificing the plant for the sake of bio diversity!

sadly with out a photo and then not i'm not certain i would recognise it. but certainly from the biodiversity thing i'd be tempted to leave them.

Just went to take a photo but this morning theyve finished the plant and nicked off! Its an established plant and is showing signs of recovery. Theres also some large caterpillars on the globe artichoke which appear to have spun a web over themselves?? Didnt have any of this last year but i suppose its a good thing from a wildlife perspective. thanks for your help, your always a fountain of knowledge!

thaks for the complement but sometimes the fountain is a mere dribble. I should learn more about the butterflies and moths that visit us.

We get the little caterpillars on our aquilegias evet ear, fortunately they usually wait until after the flowers are over. They strip the leaves but the plants come back good and healthy the following year. Don't know what they are appart from hungry.

our aquilegas regularly get eaten by caterpillars... it is annoying but better them than the veg.

There is an aquilegia sawfly which lays eggs on the undersides of the leaves. They develop into small green caterpillars.
The ones on your artichoke are possibly the webber moth caterpillar.
I have to read up on my info-can't retain much any more lol :)
I didn't think to give them to the fish SBG are there any that you shouldn't feed them ?

the quickest is to spray with soapy water but you could pick them off. have you fish in your pond? if yes pick them of and feed to the fish. if no fish then squish them.
