Why is my monkey puzzle tree turning brown from the trunk towards the end of the branches

I live in North Yorkshire and this tree has stood in the corner of the garden for the last 35 years. Last year was the first year that it had seed pods.

I was hoping someone would answer your question, because I'd like to know myself - it doesn't sound good, does it? Browning coming out from the trunk sort of suggests there's something wrong with the whole tree. I'm sorry I can't help.
