Root ginger

Has anyone planted up the bulbous growths and had them survive, let alone grow more root ginger? I know it is a tropical plant, but my last purchase from the supermarket has made such lovely babies, I want to have another go!!

I have grown them when I was in my teens ?*$*!& years ago and they grew quite quickly but the compost mustn't have been very good as the leaves quickly became yellow. I lost interest and let them die! Must have a go now that I am older (much older) and hopefully wiser :-)
