Heathers mixed with ivies can look good and of course will go right through the winter. As said above, Viola's could also be included if a little more flowers were preferred.
Lamium's and Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea' (Golden Creeping Jenny) are others that look quite good and many garden centres do autumn/winter plants for baskets. Just ask or see what they offer.

You can also mix in some of the mini shrubs that are on sale ( Euonymous, Skimmia, small conifers) but put them in the garden in Spring or they will grow too big. Universal Pansiesare always a good bet for flowers when it is mild over winter. Choose subtle colour combinations for a classy look.

Most 'winter pansies' and winter violas' seem to flower only very sparsely during winter, and then flower their heads off profusely when the spring comes. Are Universal Pansies different, and do they flower better than the others through the winter? This I'd love to know.

I bought some lovely trailing violas which I think are very pretty and delicate but colourful
