Dark stems in winter, as sort of chocolate brown in colour. It looks good against a light background or with the red, orange or yellow stemmed varieties with it. Being a Dogwood, it can take quite a damp site too but best in good light, not too shaded. Bone hardy too. Prune hard back in spring either every year or every other year for the best winter stems.

Its actually Kesselringii, gets 7 x 7 feet if you let it - prune in Spring, as Fractal says
