when do I ssplit my gunnera

I have grown it in a large pot and stand it by the edge of my pond but now it has outgrown it and is splitting nthe pot. I have had a about 20 "FLOWERS" ON IT THIS YEAR

The best time is spring once the weather has warmed up. Allowing them to put down more roots and grow away better.
You need to go for a piece that is basically a bud where the leaves grow from. They need as much root as you can get and the small buds may need careful removal to avoid damage to them or the mother plant. It shouldn't be carried out now or autumn as they will just sit over winter and rot or die off.
Must be huge to have 20 flowers and be in a pot, what species is it?
