I have 5 of these out the front as a hedge. They are growing up fine but not bulking out, how do I train them to do this?
is it pinching out the top to encourage them width ways?

If you're trying to make a hedge, Mookins, the plants should have been cut back early on to encourage basal shoots - how long have they been in and how tall are they?

If you didn't cut them by half earlier in the year, you will have to take some off now, even though its a bit late. I'd clip a third off the tops now, and more next spring.

I also have a hedge made of 5 plants originally. See my photos. I chose short stocky plants to start with and then trimmed back top and sides about 6 or 9 inches each year after the new red growth had turned green. This year it seems to have kept on developing new red growth so I have been giving it a light trim here and there as required. But I think that's the way to get it nice and bushy. It's now about 5 feet tall and that's about where I want it to be.

I have one which was tall but not thick I then started to cut back new growth once it has lost its colour and it has thickened up.
