I have two philodendron giganteum in my yard. They are starting to grow out of control. I would like them to be smaller. How do I trim them down?

I live in the central valley of California. These plants are in partial shade all day and have been in the ground for about 5 years and were very small in the beginning but are now about 4 feet tall and have a 7-9 foot width. They are very healthy

Yes, they sound healthy!! These are naturally large plants so unless you can move them to a more suitable spot you will have to spend time taming them each year. You can cut off any leaves that are too much in the way or remove individual 'crowns' of leaves. But be prepared for the plant to fight back as it may think you are pruning it to encourage more growth!
