Virginia Creeper

I have a virginia creeper (or so my mother in law tells me it is), the type that cannot stick to the wall itself. I have had it for many years and the growth has been unbelievable and the leaves are like saucers. This year, the new leaves have started to come out, but they are falling off in bucket loads! A slight wind or a gentle brush past and more fall off. Any ideas as to what the problem is and what I can do about it? It is sited in full sun against a wall (you don't say!) and has been there for about 13 years.
