I have a large lawn which has developed areas where the grass has turned brown and is totally without any roots. i have raked up the dead grass leaving areas of bareearth

Do you mean Crane fly aka Daddy long leg larvae? This sounds like what they do, You can buy naematodes that you water on to the lawn and they will kill off the larvae. Not sure if you can do this treatment now? Just green supply these sorts of bugs...
