Well I suppose Osborn could be talking about day lilies - I assumed he meant the other kind, proper lilies!

Any chance of a photo? They're very unlikely to be seed pods - these can only be produced following flowering and pollination. You sure its not flowerbuds forming? It is very late, but ot impossible...
