Can one start peony from seed? Would love to do this from old plants...

Answers
They are a bit peculiar, both tree and herbaceous peonies, but they need the same treatment. They should be sown fresh and then put somewhere for the weather to get at them. They need a period of cold to break down the coating and initiate germination. Some of them also spend their first year after germination, growing roots but no leaves. The leaves appear after a second period of cold weather, ie in their second spring. The can also take up to 5 years to begin to germinate so do not expect quick results.

They won't come true from seed unless they are species, not named varieties. But it would be exciting to finish up with a new plant
