Dying Conifers

I have a 30ft tall Leylandii screening hedge (not my choice i must add) which appears to be dying in patches, also a neighbour three doors away is equally having the same problem and two three other conifers around our area also looking very brown in patches any ideas what could be the problem, all of you very helpful gardeners out there.

I had the same problem and it was due to the Aphid, The strange thing is that as it affected more of the hedge the original infection recovered after a couple of years.

As you're in Kent, I don't know how wet it's been down there, but here in west London, its like the Sahara desert - drought would cause these symptoms.

Hi Millie, I just saw the American flag with your name, so is there a Kent in the USA?

It may be draught it has been exceptionally dry?
But it may be Cypress Aphid? I read it had been a problem all over Kent in the last 2-3 years. Result of mild winter and early spring. The stress on the tree from the infestation causes it to turn brown and drop its needles takes several years to recover. I have a cypress in my garden (not leylandii) which has brown patches this year for the first time ever but its been so dry here in East sussex I am waiting to see. I forgot to say over enthusiastic trimming can also be a cause?
