The tree seems to be evergreen as even now they are still deep green. I was told by a neighbour, that it was an
Oriental Magnolia; is this correct?

Thank you for that BB. Have to say it will need quite a heavy prune because its about 16 feet tall now!

Jcee, I see that you're new to gardening so you've come to the right place, there are some knowledgable folk on here. I've gardened for many years but I too am still a learner. I'm not even sure where your pic of the Magnolia is!

Its Jcee's avatar, Heron, though we could do with a bigger one under photos, I think, Jcee!

Everyone uses different software to re-size pics, I use Zoombrowser (Canon) The default size is 800X600 and it works on most sites. Some software gives a choice of three sizes but I like ZB as you can make it any size you want. Probably most will do the same but it does take a while to find your way around.

And if its any help, Jcee, the software that came with my camera offers a manipulate option at the top of the page - under that, there's a resize and save option. 900 x 900 works as a size for uploading to this site.

Thank you all, seems I'm a greenhorn at PC's too! Will try the options and see how I get on. Jcee

Hi Bamboo,
I have confirmed and you were right,it is a
Magnolia grandiflora and as to the pruning, I think I
underestimated its size, its nearer to 25ft and would need a tree surgeon to reach it!! My neighbour has
begged me to keep it as it is-so that part of his garden is keep private!! Thank you for your info.

If your magnolia isn't deciduous, then its probably Magnolia grandiflora - this can be pruned in the spring. This plant reaches about 10 feet after ten years, ultimately (and eventually!) will be 50 feet tall, unless its a variety of m. grandiflora which might be a bit smaller. As your specimen is fairly mature, it will probably tolerate hard pruning, if you need to do that.
