Does anyone have any experience of Restios or Elegias? I bought an Elegia Capensis from a japanese garden in Cornwall recently and it does not look too healthy just now. It has gone brown and floppy? Any suggestions, as it wasn't cheap.

This plant should not be exposed to frost - it prefers a mediterranean climate, so you will need to give it protection during the winter, either by lifting it and keeping it in a greenhouse if you live somewhere particularly cold, or wrapping with fleece.

I'm in SE England, no frosts yet and still, mostly, sunny in the daytime.
Thanks for the frost warning, my garden is on an East-facing slope with a bit of a frost problem at the lower end.

Hi' Wend, frost will flow down your garden it needs to be able toflow on through the bottom of you garden , you will see walls with either air bricks or bricks missing low on the wall,or if a woden fence holes driled low down , frost only dose damage if it is traped

I visited two gardens in East Anglia in July who were growing restios. In both cases, although the growth had been badly frosted, they were beginning to show green shoots again, even after the hard winter. Also
check out www.trevenacross.co.uk - they sell restios and give good cultural advice on their website

Thanks for the advice. I bought the plant in early October in a 3" pot, so it's quite small. Problem is, it was green and firm when I bought it and now it's brown and floppy, any ideas?

I hesitate to say this, as its a type of sedge and they love water, but is it waterlogged? Or too dry?

It was in a plastic bag outside for a few days, so it may have dried out a bit as we hadn't had any rain during that time. I gave it a good soaking and it is now sitting on the decking in a seed tray, where I can see it!!

Well hopefully it'll recover - I should think the being ignored in a plastic bag is your explanation!
