sounds like you need plenty of mulch, clay has more nuterants than soil it just needs binding togather do not try to brake it with sand or anything like that you will make it worse in the mean time, you can grow most veg, and sweetpeas and roses love it,

Yes roses do well, lots of shrubs do well if you add humas and water the first summer.

Aquilegia, Bergenia, Campanula, Astilbe, Hemerocallis, Hosta (shade), Paeonia, Rudbeckia 'Goldsturm', Astrantia, Solidago, Polemonium, Inula, Persicaria, Heliopsis......will that do for starters?
