Can I take cuttings from my gunera or somehow use the seedheads to propagate?

On plant Gunnera

Answers

Hallo - and welcome to GOY. I have a Gunnera - and pieces must root easily, as three years ago last spring, when I was tidying the plant up after the winter, a piece came loose. Rather than dispose of it, I 'threw' it onto our stream bank - and was surprised to see it thriving there a year later! It's doing really well, with several leaves and a 'flower'.

So try to root a piece! I would wait until spring now.

I tried several times to grow it from bought-in seed with no success. But division is dead easy.

After losing one or two plants due to my own incompetence (in not giving winter protection), I split the new one I bought into four plants immediately after purchase around June. Was dead easy, and all of them are still alive. I always keep one in a pot in the conservatory just in case the others all die. Extra insurance!

well, spring has arrived and Ive taken the winter protection off my gunera. Should I just cut one of the new leaves off and put it in some soil to root? Is there anything else I need to do?

No - it's a case of splitting the plant, not via a leaf. Can you chop a piece off at one side for potting up?

Its in a pot already so I might try splitting it when I repot it this year, thankyou.
