If the weather is wintery in South Carolina then I would leave most plants in their pot until spring.

I would say yes. If you transplant in the fall, the roots continue to grow and become established so there is less need to water in the summer. I do this for all my trees and bushes and have had few problems (as long as the ground doesn't freeze.
