We have a Cherry Tree in our front garden which has over the years raised the block paving where surface roots have spread. We need to re-surface the driveway and living in Cherry Avenue we'd like to replace it with another Cherry that doesn't have surface rooting. Is there such a variety? - this is the second Kanzan/Okinawa tree we have had both with the same result.

Just on the off chance I Googled Bush Cherry Tree and something came up - but downloading stopped so I couldn't see what it was. worth a look?

Putting in a root barrier (like a Bamboo barrier) will stop the roots from affecting the paving. The roots are after the loose sandy soil under the paving. Kwanzan Cherry are very pretty so I would go for the barrier for the 2-3 week show in spring.

No, is the short answer - all cherries have a habit of producing surface roots which often are prolific sucker producers after a few years.
