What is the name of this bush please? I saw it in a park in south London, rather liked the delicate berries

If this pic was taken very recently, I'd say it was Nandina domestica.

thanks spritz, i thought it looked very attractive, I expect the birds like the berries too?
does it mind shade? and how tall does it grow please?

Prefers a sunny aspect, and there are two freely available varieties, one of which is smaller than the other. Nandina domestica 'Firepower' is a smaller version, reaching no more than 4 feet, whereas Nandina domestica 'Richmond' reaches 8 feet by 5 feet wide - but it is the one that berries profusely, the first one doesn't.

many thanks bamboo, that's very helpful; might have to put this one on the list for when i move house/garden one day! this garden has a lot of shade. :-(

I have both, and made the mistake of planting 'Firepower' in part-shade. It is still there, but it doesn't get the red leaves it should. My N. domestica has flowers, but not berries, sadly. I live in hope that one day it will!

I have heard quite a bit about this plant on goy but not actually seen one. I can see why you wanted it spritz, it's lovely, perhaps it will get better as it grows? I hope so.

I can't remember when I planted it - it's about 3' tall. I could look at 'my garden' and see if I posted a photo at the time. Across the road from my daughter's house, they have a kind of hedge of Nandinas - they really do look wonderful! :-)

wow a hedge of them would be wonderful ~ and wouldnt the birds like that!

definitely on the wish list!

It's a great plant...I hope you can find a good spot for one.

you might be shocked to know that i dont put many plants in the front garden ~ i just like the back garden best! and its the one i look out on.

it is possible that it might be ok in the front garden, it isnt as shady as the back?!

Why not start it off in a big pot, and see how it manages?

I'm not shocked - we're all different.

9 Feb, 2013

yes a pot is a good idea ~ keeps the options open ~ thank you!

also if i do ever get to move i wont lose the plant!
