I did the same as Gilli ... but found that they needed a lot of water so I put it in the fish pond where it grew enormously and then I forgot to bring it in in the winter and the frost killed it ... :o( I have a new piece in the greenhouse at the moment !

I have some in a pot in the shade. All I have to do is keep the soil moist. Right now it has died back, but it will start growing when the weather warms up in the spring. Keeping it in the shade will reduce the amount of water it needs.

Buy a nice fresh piece of ginger root at the grocery store. Make sure it is plump and well hydrated. Cut the root into several pieces, making sure there is at least one 'eye' on each piece. Soak the root overnight in some warm water. Plant in rich, free draining, moist soil 5 to 10 cm deep. You can plant them directly into the ground or into pots. Ginger needs bright light but not direct sunlight. Do not let the soil dry out.
