The plant press dictionary refer to the water plantain of north america Alisma plantago-aquatica, and the RHS plant finder refer to 4 genera in response to the common name of water plant :Achimenes, Euryale,Ranunculus and Sarracenia.
The `water plant` I`m aware of is the Achimene and often referred to as the Hot Water Plant. This is an indoor/glasshouse plant.Look this up and see if it fits your plant description.
I hope this has given you a few leaders to follow.
Peter.
