My beautiful virginia creeper, which extended on three walls of my house, died last spring, there were only a few leaves,which shrivelled up and died. The previous year it was in full glory. What has caused this. We have had to strip down all of the creeper and intend planting another one this spring to replace, although it will take many years to establish like our previous one.

One reason could be damage below where it died off such as being cut through I mention this because if that is the reason then what's below could re grow?
