We aren't all fortunate enough to live in truly rural areas Bulbaholic so I 'phoned a friend' who is a farmer. He reckons that it is actually the smell that deters them and recommends 250 ml of Jeyes to 5 litres of water, i.e. 20 to 1.

Spritzhenry uses jeyes, but I seem to recall she soaks rags in it and attaches them to fences and the like, which would imply its neat, but you might contact her to check.

Had to go round and check the fences for places of ingress the other day. The had lifted the wire netting in one place. Pegged it down and it has stopped them so far. Might try the Jeyes Fluid thing though if they start attacking the fence again.

Well, we had the badger for two nights then he didn't return for the last two nights - fingers crossed. I did hang a Jeyes soaked rag on the fence last night but don't know if he came or not.
Hopefully there is not too much of interest for him in our garden as we don't have a lawn; lots of bulbs though! Talking to neighbours they have reported their cats diving through the cat flap at nights with their tails fluffed up
