I bought 2 heucheras today PEACH and BERRY SMOOTHIE, I really want them for a south facing border [I know dappled shade would be better but hey ho!]Am a bit concerned about planting them as not sure exactly WHAT the crown is, so should they be planted not too deep?

thanks for the info pamg, I will do the same as the pots then.yes........ think I could get addicted to them as well!
There was one called marmalade and another called green spice, and I may go back for them later.

Full sun tends to make the leaf colour bleach. So you lose a lot of why you bought the Heuchera. If you can try and shade them with other plants then that may help.

Have a look at Vicki1, she's a Goy member who knows a lot about Heucheras and heucherellas
Put her name in the white search box top right.......

she owns Plantagogo, a heuchera specialist mail order company. she also exhibits at Chelsea etc.

i didn't know that heucheras do better with some shade, and not in full sun like all mine are (some with a bit of shade) and are they also not so drought tolerant (have Silver Scolls which hasn't come up this year, but the others are well enough.)

I think the paler ones are trickier, my darker ones seem the strongest

now that you mentioned the paler ones, it got me thinking and i do/did have one - Key Lime Pie and from what I recall being out this morning, I didn't notice it (arrrh another casualty!), nor the Silver Scrolls. All the others, are well and happy - Sweet Tea, Obsidian, Palace Purple, Creme Brulee and one or two others, I can't quite remember.
Do they prefer good moisture usually? or maybe they didn't like the heavy wet rain last year?

I'm a novice heuchera addict and have them in a dappled shade sandstone trough, well drained compost mix and gravel mulch, I lost one potted one last year to the dreaded vine weevil.......heuchera are a favorite of theirs I understand. :0(

thanks for all the heuchera info......... very interesting. Doing a bit of research I find that the paler ones do least best in the sun, so I have tried to give them the shade of a euonymus[planted under it's 'wings'.]It's a bit of a dry spot too, so will keep them well watered, Hmmmn! vine weevils! I have a large ornamental vine just nearby, will this cause probs?I will look up vicky1 thanks pamg. Well, heucheras are certainly lovely plants so hope mine will be a success, I would like to plant a few in a large pot now in dappled shade as well. The colours are great, and the NAMES! Worth buying just for that reason.

oh, i didn't realise the evil ways of the vine weevil. having looked them up, they're more likely to attack heucheras in pots and other plants, is that right?

I didn't realise that the grubs were munching the roots until the top died and completly came away in my hand and there were these horrible white maggoty things crawling around in the pots, only heuchera were affected of the perennials overwintering in the gh.
I love the names too freeasabird, good enough to eat! :0)

Lovely choices.....I think I,m addicted to them!
Generally I plant them to the same as they are in the pot and mine are in a big trough with a pea gravel mulch, it seems to show the leaves up well and I hope protect them
