Jac - that looks like the wild one 'Herb Robert' I think is its common name. Has it got a tight central rosette, slightly raised off the ground?

I am sorry - it does have tiny pink flowers, but it can turn into an absolute menace and spreads itself everywhere. It's very easy to pull out, but of course it's up to you. I class it as a weed and pull it out immediately I see one!

Is that evergreen Denise? It's not hardy, either - so I don't think it can be - it would be very dead after the frost/snow! :-((

Jac - I'm sorry to cast doubt on what others say - but G. maderense dies at the first hint of frost. I know you've had ice and snow there, so I can't see how this could be that??

All the books say that it's a greenhouse plant or needing a very sheltered warm spot in the summer....I've seen one in a garden on the coast near us once - it grows to a height of a metre with a huge stem like a small tree, and the leaves on a maderense are about 60 cm wide. Once it has flowered, it dies.

Your plant just HAS to be something else. Sorry, everyone, to be arguing!

spritz - what do the leaves of geranium palmatum look like? That is tougher than G.maderense

20 Jan, 2010

just been on wikipedia, and I think that you are correct Andrewr, but the flowers which grow in a profusion are more morve than pink , and the petals look to have vains in them.

G. palmatum IS slightly hardier - I looked it up with that in mind, but it's still not frost hardy. Maybe Jac has underground heating?? lol.

to be honest I think I have seen it growing in waste ground were a world war one munishens factory used to be in more old cinders than soil, and wondered if it was a garden flower gon wild or an attractive weed.
