Thanks to GOYers I have discovered I've got ground elder in the garden. Just been reading up on it and it sounds worrying. Whilst I'm talking about weeds can anyone put my mind at rest that these are not weeds but honesty. Thanks

Those don't look like honesty leaves to me - I'm trying to remember the name of the weed I think they are.

Glechoma hederacea or Ground IVY. If it smells unpleasant and has runners then that is it definitely.

Hi Owdb just dug one up and it has neither an unpleasant smell or runners. The only reason I thought it was honesty was I had a few growing in the same place last year. It looks like there are buds in the top if that helps.

In that case it could well be Honesty. Not a plant that will grow here so not familiar with the new leaves.

The leaves don't look like honesty to me... doesn't normally have a red tinge.

it looks like honesty to me. Mine has a reddish tinge, I assumed due to the cold temps.

As for ground elder its not the end of the world.
When we moved in her the front bed 30mx 2m was well infested with it. I double dug and sieved the soil removing every bit. the dormant bits looked like orange pips. One section had a double dose of digging but 15yrs on not had it back . yet!!

Glyphosphate also gets rid of it but only when actively growing or in late summer just before it goes to 'bed' for the winter.

Thanks Seaburngirl, I have looked where it could have come from and it looks like its from my neighbours garden. I have some well established shrubs where I found it growing so unable to lift everything . :-(

It looks like my Honesty at the moment too,Pdb..with that tinge on the leaves..just wait a little before pulling it up,I'm sure you will have purple flowers soon..I love them..

I think it is Honesty as well, and I'm sure you'll have purple flowers!

I have had the problem of ground elder where I have not wanted to dig for several reasons. I simply waited until it was growing long enough and then picked it. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it does work, even if it takes a few seasons. It just depends how important it is to you not to have to dig it all out - and you do have to dig it ALL out. After a few years, I got rid of it - and that was about 20 years ago.

How do I say thanks?
