I have a clematis montana that I planted last year and it has just finished flowering when is the best time to prune and how much should i take off if any .I also have a wisteria that I planted last year that is in a big tub as I have a very small garden could I grow it in a tub permanetely and could it be trained as a standard I would appreciate any advise as I am not too up on pruning

Thanks for your help I went to one of the National trust gardens today and one of the gardeners there said the same thing I will just keep it tidy and see how it goes

Never be frightened of letting a plant do what it wants.
Just keep it to the size that suits you. Bigger is better!

I never pruned mine. Just clip of any bits that are outside where you want it to be. They can grow into very large vigorous plants when they get going. With a very small garden you might be better off with a different variety, which would also have a longer flowering season.
