You have to have right type of nicotiana. The flower-type won't work. A lot of the old Portugese here grow it.

ive found the seed on line and its all perfectly legal unless u sell the dried finished product. Bulbaholic...did he grow it outside in Yorkshire?

Yes, Sandra, outside and no problems.
I remember helping to thread the leaves on strings for drying in the sun - did we have sunny summers then, must have.

Yes my Father and I grew it during the 40s and 50s . We used to thread the leaves with a wire and hang them in the shed. There was a place where we sent the leaves for treatment to make it in slabs for cutting . It was important to ensure it was Virginian . We once made an error and got Havana. I've an idea we had to mix it with molasses.. In the Fleet Air Arm we had a monthly issue of 'tickler' half a pound tin of fine cut tobacco for 'rolling our own'. The Havana we passed on to an old uncle who smoked it in a pipe.

Make sure it isn't anywhere near tomatoes. That is how the tobacco mosaic virus is spread.

« Would Berberis bushes benefit from being given just nitrogen fertiliser?
My father did, South Yorkshire - 1950's, and he seemed happy with the results.
