Found this grub in a pot of compost. Anyone know what it is? The pot had held a heuchera and tulips. As I emptied the spent compost I found about seven of them. They looked very white against the dark compost but more a creamy colour against a paving slab. It wriggled a bit when first uncovered but went still as I moved it. It's about 7mm long. I crushed them under my shoe. They were soft bodied. Any ideas what they were? Should I have cherished them?

Vine weevil larvae. Get some vine weevil killer, made by provado, from the garden centre....that should zap em !!!
Chaffer grubs are much much bigger than vine weevil.

Agree with Andy this the last stage of the vine weevil before it turns into a beetle and starts its reproduction.the first stage is a grub not unlike a maggot with a brown mark on its head.
Heucheras are a favorite food together with Primulas and Fuchsias

Put them where the birds will find them, but just coming out of the pot should kill them off, they don't like sun and light.

Vine weevil it is, then. I looked them up on the rhs site - they're nasty little blighters, aren't they? I've bought another heuchera 'Silver Scrolls' to replace the old one but I think I'd better invest in some nematodes as well. Thanks for your comments. Dungy, your remark made me laugh.

Before you invest in nematodes google and read what a few other people think about them.Have not used them for a good many years ,did not find them effective ,I believe my temperatures outside were not high enough for them to increase and stay alive.

It looks like a chafer-grub. I have found them on occasion, I leave them out (on a hard surface) for the birds..
This should tell you all you need to know...
