They used to sell them at the walled garden above Solva, so they probably expect them to be OK where you are - are you very exposed to the sea wind?

The specific name gives a clue as to their preferred conditions. Littoralis means by the shore, but of course, that's in New Zealand (where I'm from), so a cold wind may do them no good, as Bamboo says. However, in a sheltered, or west facing position, a fairly dense hedge. (I prefer other things, but I'm being generous and charitable!)

yes, we planted a hedge of them in Devon and they did very well, we had the varieagated, which are slower growers than the palin green. Hardy plants.

How did they survive the dreadful high winds we just had?

What I recall clearly was what happened to quite a few hedges of these plants during that cold winter three years back, the one which killed thousands of cordylines. Many of these hedges were leafless, some killed, but luckily, we don't often get such severe winters.

@steragram - we are near the sea in Milford Haven. I have tied them back so the recent winds fortunately didn't affect them.
