Why would an established apple tree suddenly die? It has had loads of blossom on and small apples started and then died.

they are also susceptible to honey fungus. peel some bark off and see if there is a white 'mushroom' smelling layer under the bark. if yes it is honey fungus.

It's a very difficult question to answer. However, members of the rosacae family tend to have a 25-50 year life span, they're also fairly prone to fire blight.
I had a big prunus down the garden a few years ago...absolutely fine then i went away for a few days, got back and it was completely dead !!!
