I have had this Deutzia in the border for at least 18 + years. Two years ago we cut out all the dead wood from the center and really opened the shrub up. But as you can see by the photo's we are getting loads of buds but they are hard and dead,so not a single flower. I think its due to the very cold winters/spring. So is it time for it to go or do we persevere, would it help to cut it to ground level?? If we remove it there will be a whopping great hole in the border,HELP please

Well I suppose not,but they are very hard, like little pips. I will give it this year but will seriously have to look at it for next,if it does not produce flowers. Thanks for the interest.

So pleased we left this shrub alone..we took your advice Worthy1. I don't think it has ever flowered this much but it will certainly be here next year....phew no big hole in the border after all.

The buds look green. Some of mine aren't in flower yet. You sure they're dead?
