I would like to build a raised flower bed but this would mean covering the trunk of an establised bay tree by as much as 450mm. Would this damage the bay tree trunk?
Thank you for the responses and I will look to putting a sleeve around the tree.

The bay tree would be happier if it did not have that soil round its trunk, though it probably wouldn't kill it. Can you put a sleeve of some sort round the trunk so that air still get down to ground level? Maybe build an inner wall to protect the trunk, rather like a doughnut.

Do you want to keep the bay tree ?
Or make around the trunk.
Can you post a photo to let us see size?
