I planted two pear trees last year from rootball. They have taken to the ground and this year started to flower however the flowers have gone off and there is no sign of any fruit starting to grow. Is this normal in the early years of a pear tree.

It is typically ten years before pears start to fruit. There is an old expression - "plant pears for your heirs"

Just need to be patient then - a virtue which they say is in short supply with us men lol

Yes. It will still be growing a good root system.
