I have a dry stone wall with substantial earth centre. I have reduced but not eradicated the convolvus. Would a grass cuttings mulch, combined with frequent removal of shoots, help? Also, I have managed to get rid of mind-your-own-business from the top but not from the cracks in the walls - any suggestions?

A drystone wall with an earth center is a wonderful asset to a garden, Appleblossombridge, and this is how I build ours. Convolvulus is a nasty, deep rooted weed and I don't think that a grass mulch would do much good. You obviously prefer natural treatments to chemicals but, in this case, I think that a glyphosphate weedkiller is the best option, sorry. Leave the MYOB in the cracks but be prepared to keep it under control. Planting options for your wall are then unlimited.

keep removing any top growth as soon as you see it and then if you decide to use the glyphosphate spray from late august onwards. as the plant dies down for winter it will take the glyphosphate with it and do its work on the underground stems over winter.

Mnay thanks for your advice. The problem with the weedkiller approach is, I am told, that, with convolvulus, you can't ever win and application by spray limits what can be grow in the meantime. I shall try a gel.

As for the MYOB I am more than happy to TRY to keep it under control but it is running amok into the lawn, around the stems of plants where it is difficult to reach. I suspect that screwdriver and glycosophate will have to tbe the answer!

Thank you very much for your help!

Hi Seaburn girl, your advice on timing is very helpful - I'll try it (when I have dug a few more feet!)
