Can I cut back a large overgrown Forsythia & a similar lilac now -I'm trying to renovate a garden-or must I wait until winter? (I do want to keep them both)

Agreed although I have found that lilac often doesn't flower very well the next year even if it is pruned exactly when the books say to do it (immediately after flowering)

If you stick some of the forsythia prunings in the ground you'll probably find that some of them will take root and you'll have some to give away.

Now is exactly the right time to cut back both of these. The flower next year on wood produced this summer.
